The New Canaan Nature Center is home to some of the most beautiful and interesting lands, animals, and people…including Executive Director Bill Flynn and his family. It is located on 40 acres that were once the former estate of Miss Susan Dwight Bliss, and was launched back in 1960.

A nature center is more than just open spaces. It combines all the elements of nature with a wide variety of learning opportunities. It is a place that seeks to educate one and all and to develop in those who visit it a sense of stewardship for the place we live in and the planet we live on.

New Canaan’s Nature Center truly is a hidden gem; you can’t see it from the road. As you travel along Oenoke Road/Route 124, across the street from and between St. Mark’s church and the Roger Sherman Inn, just north of the downtown, is a small sign on a quiet lane:Nature Center Street Sign

Every day hundreds of people drive by without realizing that down that winding road, just out of sight, is a real Secret Garden. Open to one and all from 9-4, for no charge, one and all can stop by to wander the grounds, walk their dog, sit and enjoy the natural sights, visit the Visitor’s Center or any of the many animal learning habitats and environments.

preschool programs at the nature centerThe Nature Center is not a static spot. They operate a large number of programs for preschoolers, school agers, and adults, including a summer camp. On a spring day you can see toddlers examining butterflies, elementary schoolers meeting local wildlife, while nearby their parents and grandparents get lessons from the New York Botanical Gardens.

There are always a number of fun and interesting events just around the corner. The spring brings Earth Dayharvest festival at Nature Center and the New Canaan Dog Days: a great day for you and your canine companions. There are Secret Garden tours, the Harvest Festival in the meadow under a tent with beer, bites, wine, and live music. There is the Fall Festival and so much more to see and do.

To learn more you can visit their webpage. They have a Facebook and Instagram page, and of course you can always call or stop by.
